Reasons For Popularity Of SSC CGL

The Staff Selection Commission has already released the schedule for the SSC CGL examinations for 2020. According to the schedule released on the official website, the candidates will be appearing for the SSC CGL Tier II exams will be conducted between 15th to 18th November, 2020; leaving only a couple of weeks for the students to prepare.

It is during these few weeks that the candidates should practice as many SSC CGL Previous year papers as possible. Solving previous year papers helps the candidates to balance time and accuracy as well as it also gives an idea about the kind of questions asked, weightage of different topics, etc. It is also noticed that many times there is repetition of questions. This practice thus can help the candidates save those critical seconds when attempting the actual exam.

The SSC CGL exam is taken by lakhs of students throughout the country. It is estimated that each year approximately 25 lakh applicants fill the SSC CGL exam form. One may therefore wonder what makes this exam so popular among students when there are tonnes of other career options available and open to all.

Let us understand WHY the SSC CGL exams are so popular among students.

Qualification requirement

First and foremost, the fact that any graduate can apply for SSC CGL irrespective of the area of specialization is what makes this exam a favourite among students.  The SSC CGL is therefore the most sought after exam as it provides an equal opportunity to graduates from any stream.

Job for life

The SSC is a central government organization and therefore the jobs offered are secure and therefore, for life. The jobs offered under CGL are recession proof, meaning that an employee cannot be fired when recession hits the economy. The world has witnessed a global slowdown and therefore a secured job is more desirable than a higher CTC offered by a private sector organization.

Financial stability

The biggest advantage of working with a government organization is that it provides financial security. Even when a country’s economy may be facing the roughest recession or slowdown, employees working with the government will never face lay-offs and non-payment of salaries. This point is therefore a very important criteria which makes the CGL exam a more preferred option for many candidates.

Work life balance

One of the most important lessons that the Covid-19 pandemic has taught us is that it is very easy to blur the line between personal and professional space. It has been observed that many private sector organizations often set unrealistic and unreasonable working hours for the employees, which makes it difficult to have any time for personal growth and family. However, timings are fixed for government offices which makes maintaining a work life balance.

Salary increments

Government sector jobs offer an increment of upto a minimum of 3% annually. This excludes the other fluctuating factors recommended by the Pay commissions. The salary structure of the Central Government employees is regulated by regular reviews by these Pay Commissions. The recommendations of the Pay Commissions are employee friendly and work towards their betterment. Previously, it was noted that the 6th Pay commission played a crucial part in attracting a lot of graduates towards the Central Government job opportunities. The 7th pay commission is still awaited.

Promotions

Employees are entitled to promotions based on experience along with expertise. These promotions are held at specific times during an employee’s tenure with the organization. Timely promotions enhance an employee’s career prospects and thereby in their overall growth.

Fair and equal opportunities

Employees are given fair and equal opportunities to move ahead in their career. These opportunities are transparent and rules out any bias or preference which may include gender, caste, ethnicity, etc.

These are only a handful of reasons about why the CGL exams are so popular, but words are not enough to explain the enriching experience offered by the job.
