The healthcare systems of most industrialized countries would collapse without immigration. According to the Migration Policy Institute, 25 percent of doctors practicing in the United States are foreign born, and when you included nurses and other workers, that number is growing year after year.
The situation is similar in Canada, so Hitesh Bhardwaj was shocked when he witnessed a mother demanding that her sick child only be seen by a “white doctor” who “doesn’t have brown teeth” and “speaks English” at his local walk-in clinic in Mississauga, Canada, on Sunday.
Bhardwaj recorded the incident, in which the woman yells at a receptionist several times over four minutes. The woman claims that her child is suffering from chest pains, but refuses to allow him to be seen by a doctor that isn’t white. After staff inform her that no white doctors are currently available, she says “being white in this country I should just shoot myself.”
“I saw a doctor that was not white that did not help my kid,” the woman adds. “I would like to see a white doctor. You’re telling me there isn’t one white doctor in this whole entire building?”
When onlookers suggested that the woman take her child to the hospital instead, she stated: “I was there and they only have brown doctors.”
One onlooker retorted: “Your child clearly has more issues with you being his mother than him needing to see a doctor. You are extremely rude and racist.” The mother goes on to accuse the onlookers of “attacking me because I’m white.”
Bhardwaj told CBC that he filmed the exchange because he’s an immigrant to Canada himself and proud to live in the country.
“I couldn’t help but record the video. This is bad, this is inappropriate and shouldn’t go unnoticed.”
“I couldn’t stop thinking about it. The whole episode kept on repeating in my head, I was very upset. You know I can’t even define the feeling.”
Peel Regional Police were called to the incident, and confirmed that the woman’s son was later treated by a doctor at the clinic. No allegations of threats or assault were made, so the case was closed.
