Nursing is one of the most under-appreciated professions in our society. Often nurses are seen as “less than” the doctors, only capable of grunt work and not knowledgeable of what is going on. They deal with bodily fluids and difficult patients (and their family members) and do so happily and willingly, knowing they won’t receive much thanks.
But not everyone looks down on nurses. Megan Smith knows just how special and important they can be.
When Megan’s mom, Margaret, had to go in for surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Megan was able to see firsthand the love and care the nurses showed her mother. One nurse, in particular, stood out to her.
Olivia Neufelder is a nurse in the Surgical Transplant Unit at Vanderbilt and, as you will soon see, she is an incredibly special one.
After Margaret woke up from surgery, the effects of the medicine and anesthesia were taking a long time to wear off. She was confused and emotional.
Without another word or a thought to the long list of duties she had that day, Olivia sat by Margaret’s bedside and sang one of her favorite songs – “Dancing in the Sky” by Dani and Lizzy.
As Olivia sang, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Even Olivia herself began to tear up!
Megan was so touched by the love Olivia had shown her mother that she shared a video of the sweet moment on Facebook.

“You never left her side by choice!!” Megan wrote. “Words cannot describe the appreciation and love we feel for nurse Olivia who mom calls her angel! Your dedication to your patients is beyond any that I have seen, you truly are a beam of light and I cannot thank you enough for the compassion and care and love you shared for my mother. God bless you Olivia!”
The video eventually made it’s way to Olivia, who said she was just as touched by the interaction as they were.
“Miss Marg has touched my heart in such an indescribable way,” Olivia said. “I am so humbled and honored to be a Nurse. My thoughts and prayers are forever with this amazing family.”
Our hearts have been incredibly touched watching the love Nurse Olivia has for her patients. We couldn’t say it any better than family member Crystal Hamilton Roberts:
“Vanderbilt nurse Olivia. Is the best nurse ever,” she wrote. “A God fearing Young Lady that takes time to care and love her patients. The best example of what a nurse should be.”
“If all nurses would take the time and Care for patients like Ms. Olivia,” she added, “I believe we would see a lot more healing.”
We all have a little good inside us. Share it today!
