What do you get when a bunch of kids give their own take of the Christmas story while adults act out the details? A hilariously adorable video that has been viewed 22 million times and shared almost 600,000 times to date.
The video, prepared by Southland Christian Church, was first released in 2015, but somehow it began to circulate on social media again this year as the Christmas season approaches.
The video features kids from the church’s children’s ministry telling their own version of how Jesus came into the world. It also shows adults acting out the story according to how the children narrated it.
If you’ve known the Christmas story all your life, perhaps you will be surprised to discover that you missed a few details. For example, did you know that Mary was doing her laundry when the angel Gabriel appeared to her and told her she would have a baby?
Or did you know that when Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethleha-ha-ham in a fast donkey, they tried to get a room at the hotel, but the keeper told them that there were “no rooms, literally no rooms” available?
Perhaps you weren’t aware that the wise men gave Jesus gifts that included milk, stuffed toys, diapers and baby wipes.
And how did they ever survive in that barn? It was “too stinky” and “too crowded.”
Maybe it was the presence of the baby Jesus that made everyone forget they were in a small, smelly barn. After all, one of the wise men told him he was “adorable,” and one of the shepherds said he would be their best friend.
Most of all, Mary’s husband Joseph told him he was “the best baby I ever seen.”
Southland Christian Church creative director Hanna Wahlbrink said the video was created for the December 2015 Christmas Eve service, but it unexpectedly became popular, according to Today. At the time, it already had 1 million views, but nothing close to the number of views it has at present.
“Southland, I was so blessed when this showed up in my newsfeed!” one person commented. “I attended Southland as a college student and it will always hold a special place in my heart.”
“Thank you for this video,” another one said. “It put a smile on my face and a little Christmas spirit in my heart.”
The video continues to leave viewers amused and laughing until now, and it will probably be among the most remembered versions of the Christmas story.
“Hope it has brought laughter and joy to everyone’s homes,” Southland Christian Churchwrote on Facebook.
