Pizza is one of the most perfect foods on planet Earth. In fact, to vaguely plagiarize Benjamin Franklin, pizza is proof that God is real and that he loves us.
While some of us like it so much that eating leftovers cold for breakfast seems like a treat (hey, don’t judge), some people can’t quite stomach the thought of a morning pizza. But maybe that’s only because they’ve never had the right kind of pizza.
This recipe might change their minds once and for all! Using simple ingredients you probably already have at home, you can create a breakfast pizza that will have everyone cheering!
Everyone loves pizza—so much so that we wish we could eat it for every meal. Well, with breakfast pizza, now we can! To make this delicious dish, you’ll need five pieces of sandwich bread. You can use any style, really, but white bread is really the best.
The next step is crucial—and a little bit strange. First, slice off the left side of the crust on each piece of bread. You can do this slice by slice, or if you feel more confident, you can stack all five slices and cut them at the same time. Be careful with that sharp knife!
Make sure you only cut off one side of the crust! That’s because you’re going to need the rest for later. Next, cut each slice of bread as shown below. This can be a little tricky, because you’ll need to measure in about an inch at the top of your bread and cut down diagonally. You won’t create two perfect triangles, and you aren’t supposed to, so don’t worry if it looks odd!
Doing this will actually create 10 perfect “pizza” slices. The next thing you need to is cut off the narrowest “tip” of each slice to remove that tiny bit of excess crust from the mix. If you can’t see how this will turn into a pizza, have faith—it will all make sense soon.
Now it’s time to start putting this stack of slices together. Arrange them as pictured below on top of an un-greased baking sheet. If the finished result looks like a flower made of sandwich bread, then you’re doing things correctly!
This next step isn’t critical, but it will definitely make the project less messy. Using the back of a spoon, press down on the places where each slice of bread meets. You’re essentially creating a seal to connect the slices into one giant pinwheel.
Now, spread one tablespoon of butter on each slice of bread and then put it into your oven for three minutes at 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Once you’ve removed the toast from the oven, evenly spread one cup of your favorite marina sauce around the pinwheel, as pictured below.
Now is when things really start to get interesting with this recipe! Go ahead and crack one egg into the center of the pinwheel. Don’t worry about the egg being raw. It will cook in the oven and be nicely supported by the bread points.
Once you have finished pouring the egg into the center of the pinwheel, you’ll want to sprinkle a half-cup of shredded mozzarella cheese (or your favorite kind of cheese that melts well) on top of the marinara sauce that you already spread out onto the bread.
Now that you’ve got everything ready to go, put the entire tray back into the oven for 10 minutes at 425 degrees Fahrenheit. You’ll want to keep on eye on this while it cooks. Not only will that keep the bread from burning, but it’ll allow you to see the magic happening right before your eyes!
Once you take your tray out of the oven, it’s just one step away from being a delicious breakfast pizza! To get this finished look, top the melted cheese with a cup of your favorite greens and a quarter-pound of some fresh meat, like ham or prosciutto!
Now the time has come to reap the benefits of all your hard culinary work! Enjoy your breakfast pizza while it’s still hot. You can pull apart sections, though you’ll want to be careful you don’t get that yummy yolk all over the place. The greens add a little bit of healthy crunch, so you don’t feel too indulgent enjoying your breakfast pizza!
This amazing breakfast pizza is so ridiculously easy to make! Add this to your brunch cookbook, and every party you host is bound to go down in history.
