Every little girl dreams of the day that she will finally get married. Sure, it’s ultimately about uniting with the love of your life forever, but there’s a lot to be said about the fun that comes with planning your absolutely perfect wedding. Of course, most weddings seem to follow the same template. There’s a ceremony during which the bride walks down the aisle. There’s an exchange of vows and rings. Guests greet the newlyweds are their reception, where they eat and dance and engage in certain traditions. It’s pretty tough to break away and make your wedding unique. For one Canadian bride and groom, however, their special day could not have been more one-of-a-kind! What happened at their destination wedding in Jamaica was something no one saw coming… When Jess Nakrayko from Saskatoon, Canada, wed her true love, James, she was elated to invite her family and friends to Jamaica to celebrate their big day. She had no idea that her wedding would turn out the way it did… The wedding party was small—just 45 people—and among them was one of Jess’s best friends, Jessica Kieley, who traveled along with her boyfriend, Adam Brake. It was the trip of a lifetime! As one of the bride’s closest friends, Jessica was obviously chosen to be a bridesmaid. She couldn’t wait to help her friend celebrate that special day that so many women look forward to for their entire lives! If only she’d known what was headed her way… Jessica’s help was integral to the bride during the time leading up to the wedding. “My sister was living in Australia, and Jessica literally poured herself into my wedding,” Jess said. “She planned a full trip to Montreal for my bachelorette, hosted an incredible shower, and just did a lot leading up to the wedding.” In fact, Jessica was so busy planning Jess’s wedding that she barely had time to think about her own love life! When Jess asked her friend how serious she and Adam were getting, she revealed that the two had bought a house together, but she didn’t know whether a ring was on the horizon. However, Jess knew something her best friend did not: Adam was so serious about proposing to Jessica that he was traveling everywhere with the ring in his pocket, waiting for the right time to ask if she would be his wife! He knew that he wanted to propose in a memorable way, but he didn’t want to steal the spotlight from the bride and groom. “He told me, ‘I don’t want to take anything away from your wedding trip,’” said Jess, remembering Adam’s nerves. That’s when Jess’s sister had a brilliant idea. “My sister said, ‘What if you didn’t throw the bouquet at all?” While Jess was initially confused by this suggestion, she quickly realized it was all part of a much bigger—and crazier—plan. “The very last ‘wedding’ duty of my day was to have the bouquet toss,” said Jess. Her heart was racing with excitement. No one else except her sister and her new husband knew what she had planned… Thankfully there were plenty of cocktails on hand to help keep the bride calm so she could focus on the task at hand. Not only that, but she was sure to keep her friends—especially Jessica—distracted and having fun. Jess was excited about what she and her sister had planned for her closest friend. Added to her newly wedded bliss, it just made every dance out on the floor with her friends that much sweeter. Then, the time finally came for the bouquet toss—except Jess wasn’t throwing the bouquet at all. “[We] had the song change from ‘Man I Feel Like A Woman’ to Bruno Mars’s ‘Marry Me,’” Jess said. When this happened, Jessica—waiting for the toss—looked confused. Jessica couldn’t understand what was going on until she spotted her friend walking toward her. “I started walking to Jessica, and there was a moment where we locked eyes, and as I went to pass her the bouquet, she started hysterically sobbing, saying, ‘No, are you serious?’” “I said, ‘Yes, turn around!’” Jessica was in total disbelief. She knew that this day was going to be one they would never forget, and now it was looking like that was doubly true—but not for any reason she ever suspected. “I was looking forward to that all day. Even walking down the aisle I was so excited about it happening,” said Jess. Most brides would never dream of sharing the spotlight with someone else, even a friend, but that wasn’t the case for Jess. “Just her face alone, her reaction alone was worth it. I was like, I’m done, she can have it from here on out,” said Jess happily. Of course, not everyone totally understood why Jess would want to do something so selfless on a day that was supposed to be for her. “I had messages asking, ‘Why did you do that?” remembered Jess. The way she saw it, by helping with the proposal, she was giving back to a friend who had given her so much. It was, she felt, truly in keeping with the air of love that falls over every wedding. “The way my husband and I looked at it was sometimes the actual concept of a wedding gets lost. It’s to marry your best friend and spend the rest of your life with them and celebrating love and sharing your love with everyone else,” added Jess. There was no denying that the gift Jess gave to her newly engaged friend was one that both of them would always remember fondly. You can tell from their embrace that these two would be best friends for life. “My best friend was starting her love story—I didn’t even think about that being me giving up my day,” Jess added. “I have love and I want people close to me to have that love, too. I don’t think that people need to be greedy about love.” Some brides get the reputation for insisting on being the center of the show, but not this bride!
