Owners of pet dogs are often subjected to accidental scratching from their pet. Although it is very occasional, it may also be very troublesome in some cases.
Her pet dog bit a woman in the UK on her hand. That bit became a serious medical issue for her than she could have expected.
The woman got a serious infection in her hip due to an artificial hip joint. The sudden pain in her joints confused every doctor as nobody was able to trace the exact reason of the pain in 66 years old woman. Finally, doctors found the culprit behind this intense hip pain.
According to a report published in a journal, the doctors diagnosed that the main cause of intense pain in the hip joint is the specific bacteria known as Capnocytophaga canimorsus that commonly exists in the mouth of cats and dogs.
Before the dog’s bit, the woman was healthy and physically fit. She got a hip replacement 15 years back. After 15 years, she got a sudden pain in the same hip. When the pain did not go away for several months, she began bothering it and went to doctor when pain flared up after four months.
After several X-ray reports and other tests, the doctors came to know that she has an infection in the same hip where she got an artificial hip joint. The woman went for a biopsy, and it was revealed in a biopsy that an organism is growing in her hip that could not be identified in the laboratory.
After subsequent tests, the organism called canimorsus was identified, but the doctors at that stage were unsure if the same organism was the cause of that infection.
After a series of tests, canimorsus was considered to be the main cause of the infection in the hip joint. The destruction in the bone of that region as well as the loosening of her hip joint was due to that pathogen, she explained.
Scratches Are the Major Cause of Infection
The bacterium which becomes the cause of Capnocytophaga infection is present in the mouths of different pets. The dog may have transferred that organism from its mouth to paw from where it might have transmitted to woman from scratch. Licking the paw in dogs is considered as a major route of transmitting this disease.
After the woman was diagnosed with the infection caused due to the bacteria present in the mouth of dogs, she recalled that she was scratched by her dog before she visited the doctor to report her pain.
How Was She Treated?
After being diagnosed, the woman was treated with two surgeries to get the affected hip joint replaced. She was also given some antibiotics to treat her problem.
According to doctors, it has become very hard for people to avoid such animal-related infections especially those who are using a service dog for anxiety, depression and a lot of other problems.
